Law Review Attends Training Event at UCLA
May 31, 2008. EIC David Foate '09, Heather Brandt '09, Jordan Gilbertson '09, Stacey Cutting '09, Danny Woodbury '09, and Chad Van Hook '09, attended a training session for Southern California law reviews, hosted by Joe Christensen, Inc., the nation's leading law review printer. The training will help the Law Review make the transition to "camera-ready" desktop publishing for Volume 30. Earlier the same morning, the Executive Board met with the UCLA Law Review EIC Rakhi Patel, for an in-depth conversation about law review processes and management.
Law Review Editor Taylor Anderson Writes Daily Journal Article on Recent Supreme Court Child Pornography Case
University of La Verne Law Review Editor Taylor Anderson (J.D. expected 2009), published an opinion piece in the Los Angeles Daily Journal on May 29, 2008. The article, "Protection or Punishment? The Supreme Court's ruling is an appropriate response to a domestic crisis," discussed United States v. Williams, the recent Supreme Court case on child pornography.
Law Review Advisor Professor Diane Klein Selected Graduate Professor of the Year
On May 9, 2008, Associate Professor Diane Klein was selected University of La Verne Graduate Professor of the Year, becoming only the second professor in the history of the College of Law to be so honored. (Prof. John Hultman has also received this University-wide teaching award.) Professor Klein's work with the law review contributed greatly to her selection.
Law Review Associate Editor Jason Rose, Wins First Place in ULV Graduate Student Diversity Competition
On May 8, 2008, Law Review Associate Editor Jason Rose was awarded first place for the presentation of a paper entitled “Presidential Race”, at the University of La Verne Student Diversity Competition held in the University of La Verne's La Fetra Auditorium. Mr. Rose co-authored this paper with fellow ULV Law Student Chester Sant. The paper discuses the role race should play in the selection process of a U.S. Presidential candidate. The Student Diversity Competition was sponsored by the University of La Verne Growing with Diversity Committee.
Law Review Members Attend the ULV College of Law Founder's Gala
On April 26, 2008, the University of La Verne College of Law held an event recognizing the founders of Inland Southern California's only ABA accredited law school. The guests of honor included Hon. Paul W. Egly, Stephen Charles Jones, Esq., Sandra Rae Riley, Esq., Dr. W. Donald Clague, and the late Dr. Leland Newcomer. A number of law review members attended the fantastic event held at the Pamona Fairplex's AValon. Law Review Co-sponsors Lecture by MIT Sociology Professor Emeritus Dr. Gary T. Marx
On April 30, 2008, the Law Review and the ULV Department of Sociology and Anthropology co-sponsored a lecture by MIT sociology professor emeritus Dr. Gary T. Marx, entitled “Being Watched and Watching in the New Surveillance Society.” Law Review editors Stacey Cutting ‘09, Jordan Gilbertson ‘09, Leslie Riley ‘09, Jason Rose ‘09, and Benjamin Ruesch ‘09 attended the talk, which addressed information gathering, the effects of technological advances, and the potential social implications of the information’s use. After the lecture, staffers had the opportunity to speak one-on-one with Dr. Marx at a reception sponsored by the Law Review. The lecture was held in the University of La Verne's La Fetra Auditorium, and was attended by over 100 people. The Law Review hopes to solicit an article from Dr. Marx for Volume 30’s Symposium Issue, and to continue to co-sponsor events on campus related to the Symposium Issue topic.
Law Review Welcomes Dr. Michael Wessells, Columbia University peace psychologist, to Main Campus
April 10, 2008. Jordan Gilbertson and Gwen Schapira represented the Law Review in welcoming noted peace psychologist Dr. Michael Wessells to ULV. Volume 29 (2007-2008) of the Law Review is a Symposium Issue on the subject of child soldiers. Dr. Wessells, an internationally-acclaimed scholar in this area, spoke about the issue as it affects children in Asia, Africa, and South America. A review of Wessells' recent book, Child Soldiers: From Violence to Prevention, written by Prof. John Linarelli, appears in Volume 29. The event was organized by Assistant Professor Chris Liang of the Psychology Department and a group of doctoral students in Psychology. In sponsoring this event, the Law Review joins the Diversity Coalition, Dean Yaffe, the Multicultural Institute, the International Studies Institute, Peace Studies, Psi Chi, the International Study Abroad Center, and the Office of the Provost.
Law Review Holds Alumni Reunion
On March 16, 2008, the 1st Annual Journal of Juvenile Law Alumni Reunion was held at the COL, organized by Volume 28 Articles Editor Kristine Bell ’07 and attended by Journal grads including Layne Bartholomew ’95, Jeremy Cavin ’93, Angela Currie ’07, Knowelle Decker ’00, Virginia Godoy ’99, Warren Kato ’99, Robert Knudsen ’89, Derek May ’06, Brandi (Miles) Moore ’03, and Christel Schoenfelder ’03. Steven Telish ’77 represented Volume 1. Journal of Juvenile Law Alumni in Teaching Awards were presented to Assistant Professor Kathy Garcia ’03, and adjunct professors Lisa Rogan ’01 and Kevin Rogan ’04.
The next Alumni Reunion event is tentatively scheduled for January 24, 2009, and will celebrate the publication of the Juvenile Law Issue of Volume 30 of the Law Review.
Law Review Editors-in-Chief Attend National Conference of Law Reviews
On March 10, 2008 the University of La Verne Law Review sent its editors-in-chief to attend the National Conference of Law Reviews (NCLR) event in Ft. Lauderale, FL. Editors-in-chief for Volume 29, Steve Messner, and Volume 30, David Foate, on the trip where both were able to meet great people, including Alberto Gonzalez (pictured), and learn a wealth of information.
There were law reviews represented from all over the country at the NCLR event. The event allowed these editors to join together and share ideas amongst each other. David Foate brought back a number of ideas that he hopes to put to use for the upcoming publication of the University of La Verne Law Review.
