DEANS CORNER
By the time you read this column, most of your final exams will have been completed. Some of you, especially those who are graduating, will feel great; others will feel like you’ve been run over by a truck. Regardless how you feel about your exam performance, it is not productive to speculate or otherwise dwell on it; so forget about it and enjoy the summer.
The Dean Search Committee, which I chaired, brought three qualified dean candidates to the campus for full interviews. Each candidate met with the President, Provost, the Executive Vice President, student leaders, faculty, and staff. Each candidate brought different strengths to the table. I am pleased to announce that the University has appointed Dean Allen Easley as the College of Law’s next dean. Dean Easley, who was the Dean at William Mitchell College of Law until 2007, will be joining us this summer. His experience with both the ABA and AALS processes will serve us well as he leads the College of Law to full ABA approval. These are exciting times as we ready the College of Law for full approval.
I would like to extend my congratulations to Professor Donna Greschner who has been granted tenure, and to Interim Associate Dean Juanda Daniel who has been promoted to Professor of Law with tenure. Also, congratulations go out to Professor Diane Uchimiya who has been promoted to Associate Professor of Law. On Friday, May 9, at the University’s Annual Employee Recognition Ceremony, Associate Professor Diane J. Klein received the University’s Graduate Professor of the Year award. Professor Klein worked extraordinarily hard to restructure our Law Review this year and her award is well-deserved.
There will be some changes in the faculty next year. Professor Donna Greschner has accepted the position of Dean at the University of Victoria College of Law (in British Columbia, Canada); Professor John Linarelli will be a visiting professor at Northeastern Law School during the next academic year; and Assistant Professor Cristina Knolton is leaving us to teach legal writing at Southwestern Law School. All three will be missed. On a positive note, Professor Megan Chaney, who is currently at the University of Nevada Las Vegas School of Law, will be joining the tenure-track faculty next fall teaching Professional Responsibility and Criminal Procedure. Ed Perez has accepted my invitation to be a Visiting Assistant Professor of Law during the next academic year as has Judge Phillip Argento (ret.) who brings a wealth of experience both as a jurist and as a teacher.
The Founders Gala was held on Saturday, April 26 at the Avalon Room at the Fairplex. The event was a resounding success. Members of the bench and bar, including many of our alumni and students, attended and were dressed in elegant attire. Judge Paul Egly and the other founders of the College of Law were honored by the likes of Judge Tom Nuss, President Steve Morgan, Michael Bidart, Professor Jane Egly, and former Professor Bob Knell. I even had an opportunity to say a few words acknowledging Judge Egly as a friend and mentor. Thanks to the hard work of a lot of people, the event came off smoothly and raised a lot of money for the Judge Egly Endowed Scholarship Fund. If you thought the Founders Gala was spectacular, just wait until September of 2010 when we honor the College of Law’s 40th year in Inland Southern California.
May is always an exciting month. Bar results for the February bar takers should be out on Friday the 16th. As always, I hope that all, or at least most, of our graduates successfully pass the bar exam and will participate in the swearing-in ceremony in June hosted by the College of Law. I also look forward to the graduation party on May 17 and Commencement on May 18. As one of my final acts as Interim Dean, I will have the honor of addressing the graduates.
Finally, let me say again how much of a privilege it was to serve as your Dean this year. I am especially grateful for all the support I received from faculty, staff, and students who, in the end, came together to make this crazy year a success. I especially want to express my gratitude to Interim Associate Dean Juanda Daniel for stepping into the role I vacated and keeping the academic program on track. In 1990, I left the practice of law to become a full time professor at the College of Law; a decision I never regretted. Since 1996, I have served as Associate Dean overseeing the academic program and moving the College of Law towards ABA approval. I now look forward to spending my time in the classroom doing what I love best, which is teaching.
So I close this, my final column, wishing all of you the very best in life, both personally and professionally.
H. Randall Rubin
Interim Dean and Professor of Law
