Congratulations on your decision to apply to law school. At La Verne College of Law, we strongly believe that visiting a law school will help you decide whether what you’re seeing on paper is the real deal.
So, we invite you to schedule a campus tour with every law school that interests you. If that’s us, great! If it isn’t, we understand. Every law student is unique, and the end goal is to help you find the law school that’s right for you.
So, when you schedule a visit at a law school, regardless of where, take these questions along and learn as much as you can. You can thank us later.
Academics
- What are your law school’s specialties?
- What degrees do you offer?
- Which dual-degree programs do you offer?
- Do you offer a part-time program? If so, describe it.
- Describe the typical course load of a full/part-time student.
- Describe the legal areas of expertise of your faculty.
- What level of contact will I experience with the faculty as a student? (E.g.: How many of your faculty members have an open-door policy? How many offer assistance in the evening, on weekends, and by appointment?)
- What resources do you offer to students who need additional academic support?
- What is your average class size? (An intimate law school usually offers seminar courses with fewer than 20 students.)
- How do you prepare students for the work force?
- What types of clinical opportunities or externships are available through your law school?
Student Life
- Describe the community at your law school.
- Is your law school a commuter campus? If so, what activities are offered to help students connect?
- Describe the ethnic composition of your existing student body. Has this been steady over the last five years?
- What types of campus-based work-study opportunities do you offer?
- Who are your competing law schools?
- What distinguishes your law school from the competition?
Campus Resources
- Tell me about your law library.
- What research resources are available?
- Who will assist me with legal research if I need help?
- Is Internet access available? Wireless?
- Are laptops required at your law school?
- Are students required/allowed to take exams on computers?
- Is parking available? If so, what is the cost and how full does the parking lot get?

- What is there to do for pleasure once I move to the region?
- How many campus-based crimes have occurred in the last year? If any, what type?
- Where is the nearest hospital?
- Where is the nearest airport?
- Describe the weather.
Financial Aid
- How much is your tuition?
- How much has your tuition increased over the last five years?
- Do you provide any type of financial aid? If so, what type? Is it need or want based?
- What is the minimum G.P.A. requirement to qualify for financial aid?
- What percent of my tuition can be covered by financial aid?
- Do you recommend a specific lender? (Note: Beware of financial aid offices that do not allow you to choose your lender.)
Housing
- What are typical housing costs in this region?
- What is the city’s/region’s vacancy rate?
- Do you offer on-campus housing? If not, do you help students find housing? How?
Career Services
- How do you prepare students for the bar exam?
- Where do your graduates typically find work?
- Do I need to know which legal specialty most interest me before I begin my legal studies?
- What percentage of your graduates find jobs within nine months of graduation?
- What is the median starting salary for graduates?
- Describe your alumni network. Do you send newsletters to your alumni? If so, how often?
General
- I want my family to be included in the process. What programs/support do you offer for the families of your law students?
- I have school-aged children. Where are the best schools for them in this region?
- When does school start? How can I prepare for my first semester as a law student at your school?
