Ontario, Calif., November 5, 2007 – University of La Verne College of Law’s Eric Danowitz and Charles Mayr demonstrated that they can outpace some of the best law students in the state. The duo edged out students from top-tier law schools including University of California (Hastings) and University of California, Berkeley to be named finalists at the 2007 California Regional Thomas Tang National Moot Court Competition, held in Los Angeles on October 20.

“The team of Mayr and Danowitz should be proud of their accomplishment,” stated their Moot Court Coach Professor Kevin S. Marshall. “We expect great things from these two as they proceed to compete in the National Competition hosted later in the month in Las Vegas, Nevada. Their continued success depends on their willingness to continue to work hard with respect to their preparation for the national event.”

The National Thomas Tang Moot Court Competition is a two-phase competition sponsored annually by the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association’s Law Foundation and its Judicial Council. The first phase is comprised of six regional competitions, taking place in the Central, Northwest, Northeast, Southwest and Southeast regions of the United States and California. Finalists from each region continue to the competition’s second phase, the national competition in Las Vegas on November 15-18, 2007.

The 2007 Thomas Tang Moot Court Competition features a fictitious appeals case in which employers of NAPABA Park Service engaged in unlawful use of excessive force to remove co-worker Cristina Yang from a peaceful demonstration organized by GreenLife at the NAPABA Historic Preservation.

“We are taking our preparation for national competition very seriously,” said Danowitz. “Now is the time to refine our arguments and create a way to discuss cases in our arguments that were not brought up during the regional competition.”

The University of La Verne College of Law’s traveling moot court teams are nationally-recognized. As moot court advocates, students conduct abundant research about the area of the law set forth in the competition’s problem, analyze their findings about that area of the law, apply the law to the competition’s problem, draft briefs discussing their arguments, and develop and deliver oral arguments before a panel of judges. Those who succeed in the College of Law’s Appellate Advocacy course have the option of taking ULV’s moot court honors course through which they are eligible to participate on the law school’s moot court teams.
