For Immediate Release Contact: University of La Verne College of Law Student Wins Best Oralist Award Ontario, Calif., October 29, 2008 – University of La Verne College of Law student Melissa Pratt won second place for best oralist at the First Amendment Moot Court Competition at American University, Washington College of Law in Washington D.C. Pratt and fellow team member and La Verne College of Law student Natasha Passerello competed at the competition October 23-25. The duo was one of eight out of 29 teams to advance to the quarterfinal rounds during the competition. “Both team members worked prodigiously hard in preparation for the competition and performed admirably,” said La Verne Law Faculty Advisor/Coach Charles Doskow. “Their command of the case law and responses to the judges’ questions rank with the best I have ever heard. One judge used the term ‘phenomenal’ in critiquing [Pratt’s] first round argument.” Moot court is a simulated appellate court proceeding. Law students draft briefs and participate in oral arguments. Moot court differs from a mock trial, which refers to a simulated jury or bench trial.
