Television Star David Krumholtz of “NUMB3RS” Visits University of La Verne
College of Law
As Entertainment Law Guest Speaker

David Krumholtz speaks to ULV College of Law students about entertainment lawOntario, Calif., September 10, 2007 – University of La Verne College of Law ended classes a few minutes early to accommodate students, faculty and staff eager to hear guest speaker David Krumholtz of CBS’ hit show “NUMB3RS”. The actor was on hand to discuss the importance of entertainment attorneys to Hollywood actors.

“Hollywood is a really cut-throat business,” Krumholtz said. “As a lawyer, you have an actor’s livelihood in your hands. You’re the most essential cog in the wheel.”

He added, “What you’re learning here in law school is a very lucrative tool in a very big business.”

In a candid discussion, 29-year-old Krumholtz addressed a variety of topics, including:

  • the role of entertainment attorneys
  • an entertainment attorney’s professional reputation
  • salaries, commissions, residuals and fees
  • the challenges of negotiation, including back-end deals
  • litigation
  • the role of the Screen Actors Guild
  • the relationship between actors and studios
  • methods actors use to locate and hire entertainment attorneys
  • the partnership between an actor’s attorney, manager and agent
  • advice for students seeking careers in entertainment law: “Do what you’re going to do; learn what you’ve come here to learn. But when you’re done, move to L.A.”

In addition, Krumholtz discussed the professional relationship he has with his own attorney. “In seven years, my lawyer has never not taken my phone call. It’s astounding. I’ve only called twice when he was unavailable, and both times, he’s called me back the same day.”

ULV College of Law professor and Bar Exam Coordinator Anita Stuppler recruited Krumholtz to speak at the law school. Stuppler, an extra on “NUMB3RS,” is a member of the Screen Actors Guild and a faculty advisor for the College of Law’s Sports & Entertainment Law Society, sponsor of the event.

“I knew David would be a wonderful speaker for the Sports & Entertainment Law Society and the College of Law, because as a young successful actor, he could relate to the law school’s students,” said Professor Stuppler.

Ron Chini, president of the Sports & Entertainment Law Society added, “Our mission for the Sports & Entertainment Law Society is to close the gap between the College of Law and the Beverly Hills/Los Angeles/Hollywood scene. We’re a small practical school, and this was a huge event for us.”
