University of La Verne College of Law Launches Global Law Colloquium

International Law Expert Frank J. Garcia addresses connection between international law and justice

Ontario, Calif., September 9, 2009 – Lawyer, professor and international trade and justice expert Frank J. Garcia will present “Three Takes on Global Justice” from 6:30-8:30 PM on September 24, 2009.  This event will be the first in the University of La Verne College of Law’s Global Law Colloquium series which is open to students, the local law and academic community and general public.

“The college is delighted to host a world-class, widely-acclaimed speaker like Frank Garcia,” said La Verne Law Dean, Allen K. Easley. “Having internationally-renowned speakers from across the country visit our campus to discuss cutting edge issues in international law brings distinction to the University of La Verne College of Law.  This event helps kick off an exciting new year for the school.”

Frank Garcia, the first speaker in the series, is Professor of Law at Boston College School of Law. He will address the connections between international law and justice, and whether justice should be an important value in the design of institutions governing international economic relations among states.

The series will continue through the 2009-2010 school year and is set to become a permanent part of La Verne Law’s program of legal education. The Colloquium facilitator is Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Professor of Law, John Linarelli.

“The aim for the series is to provide a forum for continued conversation of some of the pressing legal problems of our age. Globalization affects almost everything we do in our lives.” Linarelli said. “We want to bring our own students and faculty to the conversation, but we also want the surrounding legal and academic communities to participate in the conversation.”

About Professor Frank J. Garcia
Frank J. Garcia is one of the leading legal scholars bringing international trade law in contact with theories of global justice. The author of more than thirty publications, including his influential book, Trade, Inequality, and Justice: Toward a Liberal Theory of Just Trade (Martinus Nijhoff, 2003), he is Professor of Law at Boston College Law School and director of the school's Law and Justice in the Americas program. He was a Fulbright Scholar and Professorial Fellow at the Law Institute of the Americas of the Southern Methodist University School of Law. Garcia was also Associate Director of the Caribbean Law Institute at the Florida State University College of Law, where he was an associate professor of law prior to joining Boston College Law School.

Professor Garcia has served as a consultant to Caribbean states in the World Trade Organization Doha negotiating round.  He has taught law globally, in Australia, Austria, France, and Uruguay, and has served as Visiting Professor at the University of Houston Law Center and as the Katherine A. Ryan Distinguished Visiting Professor at the St. Mary's University School of Law/University of Innsbruck Austria. Professor Garcia has also served in important posts for the American Society of International Law, including on the Executive Boards of both the International Economic Law and International Legal Theory Interest Groups.
