East Coast Immigration Attorney Joins
University of La Verne College of Law Faculty
ONTARIO, Calif. (August 31, 2005) – At a time when legal immigration issues are spurring national debate, the University of La Verne College of Law has hired immigration expert Diane Uchimiya as an assistant professor of law, bringing the law school’s current total to 18 full-time and 12 adjunct professors.
“Immigration is one of the most complex and controversial issues facing our region and our country,” said Associate Dean H. Randall Rubin. “We are very fortunate to have found someone who really understands the depth of the matter and we are confident our students will greatly benefit from her experience.”
Professor Uchimiya comes to ULV College of Law directly from Georgetown University Law Center (GULC), where she served as a teaching fellow at its Center for Applied Legal Studies. While there, she helped manage the immigration clinic and was responsible for supervising students and representing clients in asylum and related immigration cases.
Prior to her post at GULC, Uchimiya served as an immigration lawyer in Virginia with Malea Kiblan, P.C., where she coauthored “The Right to Counsel in Immigration Matters,” for Immigration and Nationality Law Handbook with Malea Kiblan. Uchimiya also practiced immigration law for Braverman & Lin, P.C., handling employment-based nonimmigrant and immigrant visa cases, family based immigration, naturalization matters and humanitarian relief and removal proceedings. While in Virginia, Professor Uchimiya also litigated immigration cases before the INS, Immigration Court and Board of Immigration Appeals and prepared complaints for Federal District courts.
Professor Uchimiya is a member of the California and Washington D.C. bar associations and the Immigration Lawyers Association. She will teach immigration law, criminal law and legal analysis.
