For Immediate Release Contact: Professor John Linarelli Talks About Regime Change and Iraq at Conference Ontario, Calif., August 8, 2007 – At the Association of American Law Schools’ Mid-Year Meeting, held June 17-20, 2007 in Vancouver, Professor John Linarelli spoke about his research on when it is, and is not, appropriate to intervene militarily in a country to bring about “regime change” – a change in the political and legal order of a country. His paper is entitled “When Does Might Make Right? Using Force for Regime Change.” “In the past several years, international law has been subjected to enormous pressures. Some have questioned our commitment to it,” Linarelli says. “I want us to return to the values that international law should bring to us as law. It is important that we not lose sight of the fact that international law is part of our law.” While many legal scholars have looked at the question of regime change, Linarelli’s take relies on his considerable interdisciplinary talents in legal, moral and political philosophy. His research on regime change is part of his ongoing work in trying to replace power concepts with moral concepts as a source of international law. “My question is: What moral conditions compel states to have collective duties to assist peoples who want regime change?” Linarelli says. “If international law is to be legitimate, it must have its source in morality. Iraq was not a good candidate under the approach I advocate.” Those seeking more information about Professor Linarelli’s paper should e-mail him at jlinarelli@laverne.edu.
