Law Librarians Recognize ULV Dean’s Influential Writing

Ontario, Calif., July 24, 2006 – The University of La Verne College of Law is pleased to announce Dean Donald Dunn and co-author Roy M. Mersky’s Fundamentals of Legal Research has recently been honored by the ALL-SIS Centennial Committee as one of the most influential writings in the legal profession from 1957-2006.

Fundamentals helps students all over the nation become successful legal professionals by providing them with the skills they need to research current law and legal precedents,” said Dean Donald Dunn. “We are pleased our writing has had such a profound effect on the legal community.”

Published in 2002 by Foundation Press, the 8th edition of Fundamentals of Legal Research contains 821 pages and over 200 illustrations in 24 chapters and eight appendices. Used in both first-year and advanced research courses in law schools and paralegal programs, the text covers almost all aspects of legal research, including court cases, state and federal legislation, administrative law, legal periodicals, international law, federal tax law, and electronic research. The resource’s 9th edition is scheduled for publication in Summer 2007.

An authority in law librarianship and one of only two law librarians in U.S. history to serve as a law school dean, Dean Dunn joined ULV College of Law in 2003 after serving on the faculty at Western New England College of Law for 30 years. He was also the law school’s first librarian.

Dean Dunn is an active member of the American Bar Association, a current member of the Gavel Awards Screening Committee and past-chair of the Law Libraries Committee of the Section of Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar. He is the author of several books and articles and has been honored with many awards including the 1993 Article of the Year Award from Law Library Journal.

At the University of La Verne College of Law, Dean Dunn teaches legal analysis and writing and practices a strict open-door policy to assist students at the College of Law in all aspects of their legal education. He also guided the law school through its recently obtained ABA accreditation.
