Media Advisory Contact: La Verne Law Students Shine at Versión en Español (Click Here) Ontario, Calif., June 29, 2009 – University of La Verne College of Law students Briseida Luna and Jacob Ramirez shined during the quarter-final rounds in the Hispanic National Bar Association Moot Court Competition March 3-5 in Miami, Fla. “Briseida Luna and Jacob Ramirez both argued well in the quarter-final round, against another terrific team from Thurgood Marshall School of Law, Texas Southern University,” said Associate Professor and Director of Academic Support Kathy Garcia at La Verne Law. “Ultimately, the Thurgood Marshall team advanced, but both teams received complimentary comments from the judges, who described the arguments of all four advocates as ‘excellent overall.’ ” University of La Verne students ranked in the top eight teams in the nation from a field of 31. Professor Garcia noted that Jacob Ramirez deserved special recognition after he substituted into the La Verne team with only two weeks left for preparation. Ramirez completed a brief under a “nearly impossible deadline,” Garcia said. “He delivered three splendid rounds of argument. That he was able to do so under the time pressure involved, while exemplifying a professional, positive, and team-oriented demeanor, is truly commendable.” Both team members argued superbly. “Their dedication and drive are admirable,” Garcia said. Other teams that argued in the quarter-final rounds were Florida International, Loyola Los Angeles, Loyola Chicago, New York Law School, Univ. of Texas, and Univ. of Miami. Besides Thurgood Marshall, the Univ. of Texas, Univ. of Miami, and Loyola Los Angeles teams advanced to the semi-final rounds, with Univ. of Miami receiving the Best Team award. “We are very proud of both advocates,” Garcia added. # # # About the University of La Verne College of Law # # # The University of La Verne College of Law has been provisionally approved by the Council of the Section of Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar of the American Bar Association since 2006.
