Graduates, Founding Dean and Legal Writer Honored on May 20
at ULV College of Law’s Commencement Ceremony
Ontario, Calif., May 24, 2007 – Proud family and friends gathered on the West Lawn at University of La Verne College of Law as Dean Donald Dunn and Associate Dean H. Randall Rubin presented over 60 diplomas to Juris Doctor (J.D.) candidates during the law school’s May 20 commencement ceremony. During the ceremony, the College of Law also honored its founding dean, the Honorable Paul Egly (Ret.), and commencement speaker Bryan A. Garner.
Nationally-recognized legal writer, Bryan Garner, served as the College of Law’s 2007 commencement speaker. Garner is best known as the founder of LawProse Inc., America’s foremost provider of Continuing Legal Education training in legal writing, editing and drafting and as editor-in-chief of Black’s Law Dictionary, since its seventh edition. To honor the prolific author of 21 books and almost one hundred scholarly articles, ULV College of Law presented Garner with an honorary LL.D. (Doctor of Laws) degree.
In addition, the law school’s founding dean and Dean Emeritus, the Honorable Paul Egly (Ret.), was named Professor of Law Emeritus for his 37 years of service to the law school. A World War II veteran, Egly served on the bench of the Superior Court of California from 1968 to 1981 and was the law school’s first dean from 1970 to 1976. In 1983, he became a full-time member of the faculty at the College of Law, and during his tenure, he developed the Lawyering Skills Practicum, a course focusing on strengthening students’ clinical skills.
Highlights of the May 20th commencement ceremony included remarks by University of La Verne President Stephen Morgan, College of Law Dean Donald Dunn, Valedictorian Heather Leigh Hruby and Alumni Association President Christel Schoenfelder ‘04.
“The ULV College of Law community congratulates the members of our 2007 graduating class for their dedication and perseverance in completing the requirements to earn the J.D. degree,” said Dean Donald Dunn. “We hope our graduates reflect fondly on their time at the College of Law, and we welcome our new colleagues as they transition into legal practice.”
