Roe vs. Wade: Past, Present and Future
With Dr. Sarah Weddington
ONTARIO, Calif. (April 12, 2005) – Thirty two years after Roe vs. Wade, the landmark Supreme Court decision that found state laws banning abortion to be unconstitutional, Dr. Sarah Weddington who successfully argued the case will discuss how the ruling may be impacted as speculations swirl around the possible retirement of current justices.
Weddington says the controversial issue has now reached a crescendo as Justices William Rehnquist and Sandra Day O’Connor reportedly consider retirement, and activists on all sides prepare for a fight over President Bush’s next high-court nominee.
Weddington, the featured “Dean’s Distinguished Speaker” at the University of La Verne College of Law, will address “Roe vs. Wade: Past, Present and Future” on April 19. Weddington first argued the case in 1971 at age 26. She won the case in 1973. “If someone told me then, ‘You will still be talking about this 32 years later,’ I would have been very surprised,” she said. The controversial issue has had its supporters and detractors, but there has been greater interest in it recently because the ruling now possibly is in danger of being overturned, Weddington said.
There have been several laws adopted over the years that have chipped away at Roe vs. Wade, Weddington noted, adding, the questions now are: How did we get to this point? And what is likely to happen?
