ULV MOOT COURT TEAM WINS 4 TOP AWARDS

ONTARIO, CA (March. 6, 2003) — At the recent Tulane Mardi Gras National Sports Law Competition held February 25 to 28 in New Orleans, the University of La Verne College of Law
team (Kevin Rogan, Judi Jones and Jennifer Field) competed in the Preliminary Rounds against 31 other schools, and won the following awards:

  • Best Oralist – Kevin Rogan
  • Third Place Brief – ULV (Brief Coordinator Jennifer Field)
  • #1 Oralist Team in the Preliminary Rounds (Kevin Rogan & Judi Jones).
  • Semi-Finalist (top 4) team.

ULV advanced to the Octofinal and Quarterfinal rounds and beat both teams in both rounds to advance to the Final Four Semi-final round. The ULV team then competed against the University of California, Hastings College of Law, in the semi-final round Friday morning, and UC – Hastings advanced from that round to the Final Round and then beat Loyola Law School to win the Championship Team award.

This was the first time ULV has competed in the Southeast at a national moot court competition, and faced some extremely tough competition from some strong ABA-schools. ULV was also the only non-ABA approved school competing.

ULV competes in approximately seven national moot court competitions annually. Each competition requires a substantive Appellate Brief, which is judged by a panel of appellate attorneys or judges, and an Oral Argument competition, in which each team of two students from each school argues for a total of 30 minutes on a fictitious appellate problem before a fictitious appellate panel of justices, after which the other school's team argues for an additional 30 minutes. The team judged to have presented the best oral argument then is deemed to have
“won” that round, for purposes of advancement in the competition.

Other teams ULV competed against include:

American University Washington College of Law, Ave Maria School of Law, Benjamin Cardozo School of Law, Brooklyn Law School, Capital University Law School, Duke University College of Law, Florida State University, George Mason University School of Law, Georgetown University Law Center, Loyola University School of Law, Marquette University School of Law, New York Law School, Saint Thomas University School of Law, South Texas College of Law, Southern University Law Center, University of Arkansas, University of California Davis School of Law, University of California Hastings College of Law, University of Connecticut School of Law, University of Colorado, University of Illinois (two teams), University of Miami, University of Michigan, University of San Diego, University of South Carolina, Villanova University School of Law, Wake Forest University School of Law, West Virginia University College of Law, Widener University School of Law, and William and Mary School of Law.
