$17,000 Donation Launches University of La Verne College of Law’s
New Scholarship Campaign Targeting Future Employers
ONTARIO, Calif. (January 27, 2005) – University of La Verne College of Law is launching a new scholarship and cash prizes campaign on February 10, unveiling a $15,000 gift from Inland Valley Arbitration Mediation Services (IVAMS) and a $2,000 endowment from a private donor.
IVAMS President Peter Eggersten will present $1,000 to students who excelled in arbitration and mediation classes. The Pomona organization will fund the gift for a minimum of 15 years.
Students who excel in real estate law will receive $500 cash prizes from the Beverley Sims Edwards Endowed Prize in Real Estate, which has made the commitment for four years. Edwards is a local realtor, and her husband, Rex Edwards, is a second-year law student. The awards ceremony is slated between 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. at the Mistretta Family Foyer on campus.
The law school seeks to encourage other businesses and law firms in the Inland Empire to make contributions to its scholarship and endowment funds. Dean Donald Dunn pointed to the economic and labor-relations advantages for potential employers to support similarly targeted gifts.
“It’s certainly a win-win situation for the students and their future employers in the Inland Empire,” Dunn said. Law firms will know who the best talents are when they hire graduates, and businesses that support developing talent encourage them to stay in the area, he added.
The campaign targets specific businesses and law firms and connects them to the law school curriculum. For example, a law firm specializing in trial or family law would fund prizes for trial and family law classes. Businesses that support employment or intellectual properties classes would award the students who excel in these courses.
